After first words, Donny van Iperen is now taking first steps: “Good hope he will get out of this”

After his first words, former Telstar player Donny van Iperen is now also making physical steps. “He can now walk independently. Still a bit jerky, but we see a positive development. I am hopeful that he can come out of this with marginal side effects,” brother Joey says about his brother’s recovery.

“He then walks for a distance of 100 meters. After that he is really exhausted. He now saves the small pieces in his apartment without support,” continues Joey.

Moldavia

At the beginning of August, the football player from Sint Pancras had an unfortunate collision on the football field. This happened in Moldova, where Van Iperen played football for FC Zimbru Chisinau. In mid-August, the 27-year-old footballer flew back to the Netherlands where he would be further cared for.

transfer

About a month ago, Van Iperen was transferred from Erasmus MC in Rotterdam to Heliomare in Wijk aan Zee. Because the North Hollander is a carrier of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, he lives in an apartment in the care complex.

The family provided 24-hour supervision, but because Van Iperen continues to take steps, that has become less. They are no longer present in the evenings and the idea is that he will also find his own way during the day in food, therapy and rest.

recovery

At the end of August, Van Iperen spoke his first words after the accident in Moldova. He can now walk independently and the progress is clearly visible. “His long-term memory is fairly good. What he finds difficult are complex matters where your brain has to work fully. For example, combining emotions with having a conversation. His word finding is not optimal, but you can talk to him,” says Joey. .

At the beginning of August, things still looked terribly bleak for Donny van Iperen. A greenhouse plant was the doom scenario, but a few months later the world looks completely different. “The specialists see a great development. A steep curve, they say. They cannot yet say where it will end,” says a positive Joey van Iperen about his brother.

The crowdfunding campaign that the family has set up now stands at an amount of more than 40,000 euros. The money will be spent on treatments at home and abroad.
