“Didn’t go as planned”
In mid-October, Wayne Rooney took over Birmingham City, which was in sixth place in the Championship, and 15 games later they were ranked 20th. The Blues therefore decided to part ways with the coach on Tuesday. “Despite the efforts, the results have not met the expectations expressed at the beginning of the collaboration. Therefore, the board is of the opinion that a change in management is in the best interests of the club,” said a statement from the English second division club.
Ex-professional Rooney’s term ends after less than three months and a negative run with only two wins from 15 games (point average: 0.67). After the 3-0 loss at Leeds United on New Year’s Day, Rooney was insulted by his own fans. The commitment of Manchester United’s record goalscorer was linked to great hopes. Club boss Garry Cook spoke of “a milestone” for Birmingham at Rooney’s inauguration. Now he said: “Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us didn’t go as planned and we decided to go in a different direction.”
Zidane, Kuntz & Co.: These trainers are currently on the market
Rooney is still waiting for his breakthrough as a coach. His previous stints with the second division club Derby County and the American club DC United had not been successful. In Birmingham, U21 coach Steve Spooner is taking on interim responsibility.
