After criticism: German Athletics Association is examining double start rule

After criticism of the ban on double starts at the national indoor championships on 17/18, the German Athletics Association will take action. February in Leipzig check this rule.

“Due to the current discussion on this topic, we will decide in a timely manner in consultation with Jörg Bügner, Board Member for Competitive Sports, on how to further deal with this regulation,” said a statement from the DLV.

The association responded to criticism from former national coach Wolfgang Heinig, who wanted to register the two-time European obstacle course champion Gesa Krause for two middle-distance races.

The 31-year-old runner wants to return to the top international level after the birth of her daughter Lola Emilia in the spring. She would like to lay the foundation for this during the indoor season.

“The reason for this regulation in the DHM announcement is that in the past numerous athletes had registered for several middle distances and then did not take advantage of these options at short notice,” explained Sven Schröder, DLV event director.

As a result, other athletes were denied a possible starting place. This even led to the cancellation of entire semi-finals. The regulation banning double starts was therefore introduced last year.

“I am very pleased that the DLV is reacting so quickly to our request and trying to find a solution for a possible double start at the indoor DM in February in Leipzig,” said Heinig, according to the DLV statement.
