After carts full of sugar beets, the bridge in the Beemster now weighs caravans and campers

The local residents could not bear to see that the weighbridge on the corner of Jisperweg and Volgerweg in the Beemster was languishing. They refurbished the agricultural monument from 1952, made sure the scales worked and now run volunteer services. The weighbridge can be used by appointment. A fee of 5 euros is charged for weighing.

Theo Postma is one of the volunteers of the Weegbrug in the Beemster.

The Weers couple from Purmerend would like to know how heavy their caravan is. “You want to be safe on the road,” says Mrs. Weers. “It is also getting busier and more idiotic. People have no patience at all with caravan drivers on the highway. They all go too slowly.”

Fortunately, they have never experienced that they drove off balance, swinging on the road. “We’ve always had very heavy cars,” says Mr. Weers. The weight comes to 1850 kilos. A little too high, but the couple is satisfied and reassured.

Theo Postma is on weighbridge duty this week. The former gym teacher lives a little further away. “In the past, the farm wagons full of sugar beets were weighed. The beets were then taken to ships in the North Sea Canal and the empty wagons were weighed here again. That’s how you calculated the neat result.”

Until about 20 years ago, the weighbridge was still in use and then fell into disrepair. The local residents saw this with dismay and decided to adopt the weighbridge. A foundation was set up and together with the historical society in the Beemster, it refurbished the weighbridge. “Because the clock is analog, we had to bring in some specialized retirees to make the business work properly,” says Theo. The Weers couple has already returned home and Theo locks the door. There are no other appointments for today.

The weighbridge can be reached via telephone number 06-83899703.
