After bankruptcy against Georgia: Bulgaria’s national coach Petrov resigns

“No Moral Right to Stay”

Bulgaria coach Yasen Petrov has resigned after his team’s 5-2 draw with Georgia. “I have no moral right to stay,” said Petrov on Monday night after the bankruptcy in the group stage of the Nations League. After the second day of play, Bulgaria is third with one point. The 53-year-old Petrov had only looked after the team since January 2021. In the game against Georgia there were many mistakes in defense that cannot be explained, said Petrov. He stressed that he took full responsibility for the failure of the national team.

The disappointment in the Balkan country after the bad game against Georgia was enormous. According to media reports, the President of the Bulgarian Football Association, Borislav Mihaylov, left the stadium before the end of the game. The association’s leadership and President Mihaylov expressed their “strong indignation” at the performance of the national team and the “catastrophic defeat” in a statement on Monday. Technical director Georgi Ivanov will take over the coaching duties on an interim basis.
