Sampaoli is to follow
FC Sevilla parted ways with their coach Julen Lopetegui immediately after the 4-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund. “Julen Lopetegui is no longer the coach of Sevilla FC,” the LaLiga club said on Twitter late Wednesday evening. The end of the 56-year-old was practically sealed before the defeat in the Champions League against BVB.
“I have a lot on my mind. I think back to many beautiful things. I have many different feelings. Think of the city, of the fans, of the players and so on,” said Lopetegui. After the game he was sent out of the dressing room to say goodbye to the fans. The coach took the strange separation with gallows humor. When asked when he found out about his leave of absence, Lopetegui replied: “Today. So officially.”
Reyes to Ben Yedder: Sevilla FC’s most expensive departures
Jorge Sampaoli is considered the favorite to succeed him, but official confirmation is still a long way off. The Argentinian, without a club after leaving Olympique Marseille at the end of last season, scored an average of 1.75 points in 53 competitive games in Seville in 2016/17 – but due to the short appearances in his last stations, it is still considered a risky decision by the highly decorated sporting director Monchi. The 54-year-old signed Lopetegui after his return following a failed attempt at Roma in 2019. With him there was a third and two fourth places as a result, in 2019/20 they celebrated winning the Europa League.
“I have the utmost respect for him. I wish him only the best for the future. He’s a fair sportsman,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. After just one win from the first seven games, Seville is not only in a serious sporting crisis in the domestic league. The Andalusians have not yet won in the “premier class” this season.
