After an argument with the national Dorcas, Texel residents start their own thrift store

The board and volunteers of Kringloopwinkel Texel start their own business. They continue independently under the name Struun TX. At the end of last year, employees were no longer allowed to enter the building of the Texel Thrift Store in Den Burg, because they had been denied access by the national board of Dorcas.

Texel chairman Jan van Schie does not yet want to say where the new Struun TX store will be located. He does not think it is wise to go public with this now. On Facebook Kringloopwinkel Texel indicates that it will continue under the name Struun TX. The organization is also now registered with the Chamber of Commerce. It states: “Preparatory steps for starting a thrift store in used consumer goods.”

Accounting

This means that things will no longer work out between the people of Texel and the national organization Dorcas. The argument between the two parties was mainly about the increased number of administrative tasks. All items that come in had to be registered separately by the volunteers. And according to chairman Van Schie, most volunteers do not want that.

“A volunteer is motivated by other things and wants to keep things simple. They want to have fun with each other. That is why they have said that they are collectively stopping,” he previously told NH Nieuws.

Jan Jacob Hoefnagel, board member of the national Dorcas, indicates that it cannot be otherwise. According to him, the goods administration is really necessary for an accountant’s report. “There are laws and regulations that we must adhere to.”

According to Van Schie, it is a huge job for which there is no time. Moreover, the board had the impression that they no longer had almost any say in the Texel branch. “That will be taken over by the organization in Almere,” he previously told NH Nieuws.

The Texel board was still open to a discussion, but at the same time wanted to make the branch independent and no longer operate under the name Dorcas. That was not negotiable for the national organization. Board member Jan Jacob Hoefnagel previously indicated to NH Nieuws that they would have liked to speak with the board on Texel. However, that came to nothing, causing Dorcas to close the Texel branch.

Own cycle

All 50 volunteers and the board of the former Dorcas Thrift Store have resigned, but as far as Hoefnagel is concerned, that is not the end of the store on the business park on Maricoweg. The national organization is now looking for new volunteers.

“Dorcaswinkel is a beautiful large thrift store in the heart of Texel. Are you looking for a meaningful job and do you want to contribute to supporting people in need? Then register as a volunteer at this dynamic store.”
