From next week you can drive a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour on Korte Vondelstraat in Alkmaar. Road users are informed with traffic signs, but also digital speed meters. Later, the layout of the street will also be adjusted to discourage speeding. The Korte Vondelstraat and the adjacent Vondelstraat are notorious for serious accidents.
The 30 km zone will soon run from the Bierkade and the Limmerhoek, where that speed already applies, up to and including the Korte Vondelstraat and a small part of the Vondelstraat (up to the Hooftplein), according to media partner Alkmaar Central.
The municipality is taking the previously announced measure because relatively many accidents occur on Korte Vondelstraat and the adjacent stretch of Vondelstraat, sometimes with serious consequences. Four came in a year and a half people for life.
On New Year’s Eve, an 86-year-old pedestrian was hit on the zebra crossing at the Oudegracht. He later died from his injuries. Pedestrians have also been hit on the zebra crossing at Hooftplein in the past few years.
According to Alkmaarders, the Korte Vondelstraat and the Vondelstraat are one extremely dangerous stretch of road in the city. “You barely see pedestrians. That’s because the zebra crossing is higher because of the bridge,” they previously told NH Nieuws.
In addition to the speed restriction that will come into effect next week, the road layout will also be adjusted. The municipality expects that to happen this fall.
37 accidents in 5 years
In the past year, the police were called eleven times for a traffic accident on Korte Vondelstraat. 37 times in five years, figures show. These are not necessarily all collisions. Bicycle falls and hitting a tree are also among these reports. “We are also not always called in the event of an accident,” said a spokesperson.
Flex flash
Further down the Vondelstraat, the mobile speed camera was replaced today. The flex speed camera is now located at the City Farm for the second time and checks the maximum speed of 50 km/h for traffic driving towards the center.
