After a year full of doubts, Anwar El Ghazi now hopes to go to the World Cup

Anwar El Ghazi scored the opening goal in Eindhoven on Sunday afternoon. A nice moment for the attacker who has had a difficult period. After the game against NEC, he briefly looked back on that period, but there was also speculation about the future.

Anwar El Ghazi joined from Aston Villa last summer. The winger had hardly played for a year. The trainers did not believe in the PSV player. It caused doubts.

“I sat still for a year without being injured. The trainers didn’t see it in me. That will get into your head. You start to wonder if I can still do it.”

“I’m also just a person with feelings”

The attacker continues his story. “I’m just a person with feelings. Then it is logical that you start to doubt. But I’m a fighter and I never give up. I am happy that my qualities are floating again here.”

Despite the doubts, El Ghazi has not wondered whether he could handle the step to PSV. “I showed it at the highest level in the Premier League. I also had a good conversation with the trainer. I made this choice based on that.”

“They are preparing my passport”

The winger indicates that he is getting fitter. He knows that it is not constant enough yet, but in terms of return it is coming again.

The future therefore looks brighter for El Ghazi, in fact a World Cup beckons. The Moroccan Football Association is working on his passport. “I don’t know the exact state of things, but the fact remains that they are preparing my passport. It remains to be seen whether that will still be possible before the World Cup.”

If that succeeds, there is a good chance that he will be allowed to travel to Qatar. “Of course that is in the back of my mind. I hope to go to the World Cup. But I will first focus on the last matches with PSV.”
