After a long soap opera, snow is a spoilsport for RKC Waalwijk and Go Ahead Eagles

For hours it was uncertain whether the away game that RKC Waalwijk would play against Go Ahead Eagles on Friday evening could take place. Finally, referee Jochem Kamphuis made the decision at a quarter to nine: the Eredivisie match in Deventer Adelaarshorst was cancelled. It is striking that earlier this season the match in Waalwijk between RKC and Go Ahead Eagles was also canceled due to the snow.

By six o’clock on Friday, it was already reported that the game would be cancelled. That turned out to be premature, although Kamphuis kept players and supporters in suspense for a long time. The game was then supposed to start at eight o’clock, but that became half past nine. Then, it was reported, the orange ball would start rolling on the field at a quarter to nine.

However, the field turned out to be very wet and slippery. This made it dangerous for the players and kicking off was no longer an option for referee Kamphuis. “Both clubs wanted to play, but this is irresponsible,” the referee told an ESPN reporter. RKC coach Joseph Oosting had already hinted that playing football under these winter conditions would not be fun and would not be wise either.

The KNVB will determine later when the match must be made up.
