After a firecracker throw followed by a game being abandoned in the Regionalliga West between Rot-Weiss Essen and Preußen Münster, the game was scored 2-0 in favor of the guests. That was decided on Friday by the sports court of the West German Football Association (WDFV). Almost two weeks ago, in the top duel with the score of 1:1, firecrackers flew out of the Essen fan corner in the direction of the field shortly after the guests’ equalizer by Gerrit Wegkamp. Some Münster professionals like Marvin Thiel suffered a blast trauma.
“First of all, we are happy that the game was scored in our favor and that the sports court followed our legal opinion. Nevertheless, we don’t feel like winners in a game in which all limits of sportingly fair competition were far exceeded. As sportsmen, we would much rather have brought about a sporting decision on the pitch. The fact that our players and our athletic trainer are still struggling with the consequences of throwing a firecracker underlines the seriousness of the offense and we are very happy that the alleged perpetrator could be identified,” said sporting director Peter Niemeyer.
RWE announced that the association is now examining whether action will be taken against the verdict. “The association’s decision is a severe punishment for Rot-Weiss Essen. We’ve been working towards making it a replay. That would have been the more appropriate judgment from our point of view. We will now discuss internally whether we should appeal,” said CEO Marcus Uhlig.
