With performances like on Saturday, BVB veteran Mats Hummels could soon become an issue in the German national team again. After Borussia Dortmund’s 4-2 win in Freiburg, the match winner commented on the ongoing search for a national coach.
Hansi Flick is history, a successor has not yet been found – and that less than nine months before the start of the European Championship in his own country. It is therefore no surprise that Mats Hummels, who was recently no longer called up to the DFB team, is also “following the situation with excitement”. The 34-year-old revealed this on the “Sky” microphone after the final whistle in Freiburg.
When asked about the possible new national coach – former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is considered the top candidate – the defender kept a low profile.
“I’m staying completely out of it. I haven’t been there for so long, I don’t have a real insight at the moment,” emphasized Hummels.
The 2014 world champion played his last of 76 international matches more than two years ago.
Hummels: Things “clearly have to get better” at BVB
Hummels shone in an unusual role in Breisgau: the defensive player scored twice for BVB, who were able to breathe a sigh of relief after the hard-fought away three-pointer.
“It was a work victory. But you shouldn’t put it too negatively, Freiburg away from home is always a tough place,” emphasized Hummels, who, however, still sees a lot of room for improvement: “To find solutions against a pressing opponent and then above all one Having a certain level of class and composure on the ball – that’s clearly something we have to improve on if we want to be a top team.”
In the previous season, the Westphalians almost won the championship trophy after an impressive comeback. However, a mistake in the decisive match against Mainz (2:2) cost Edin Terzic’s team the title.
