After a complete crash: Ajax Amsterdam fires coach

The troubled Dutch football record champions Ajax Amsterdam have fired coach Maurice Steijn after just seven league games.

With this, the Europa League participant reacted to the recent decline, in the Eredivisie Ajax slipped to second-to-last place after a 3-4 defeat against bottom club FC Utrecht.

The 49-year-old Steijn only took over from John Heitinga at the start of the season and signed a contract until 2026.

He recently had doubts as to whether Steijn was “still the right man in the right place. Together we came to the conclusion that it was better to part ways,” said managing director Jan van Halst.

It was only at the end of September that sporting director Sven Mislintat had to resign from Ajax. Hedwiges Maduro is taking over the training for the time being.

Ajax disappointed last season when they finished third in the Eredivisie and lost their regular place in the Champions League.
