In 2016, the American car manufacturer said that the success story of the Fiesta was far from over, but seven years later that is the case.
“This is a decisive event for Ford: the old Ford is leaving Europe and the new, electric Ford is taking its place,” says sector expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the German Center for Automotive Research. Rising parts costs and preference for SUVs also played a role in Ford’s decision to phase out the Fiesta.
The Cologne plant is currently investing 2 billion euros to prepare it for the production of electric cars. The first should roll off the production line by the end of this year.
Earlier, Ford already deleted other models from its European range. For example, production of the mid-sized Mondeo was stopped last year, and the S-MAX and Galaxy followed earlier this year. In 2025, the compact mid-sized Focus will also be phased out.
