After 40 years, the yellow cart of the Bakker family disappears: “Want to go on holiday yourself”

With mixed feelings, Dirk Bakker (68) and his wife Astrid are today for the last time on the beach of Schellinkhout with their iconic yellow cart. For forty years they stood there every summer selling drinks and snacks. But the couple also wants to go on holiday themselves and have therefore decided to sell the business. “We are going to enjoy our retirement, but it will feel crazy not to be here next year.”

Dirk (67) sits on his plastic chair in the shade and calmly watches Astrid helps a customer in the yellow cart. “Do you want to pin?” she asks the sweaty visitor who is craving an ice cream.

Whether it rains, storms or is a tropical day like today, the Bakker family was on the beach of Schellinkhout every day from April to September. The cart has therefore become a household name where recreational users, kite surfers and walkers come to visit. “I grew up here and not only saw my own child grow up here, but also those of the visitors,” laughs Dirk.

Dirk can live with the fact that after forty years they have decided to stop the catering cart. Astrid is very sure that she will miss the work and the people. “I’m a workaholic, so I hope I can let it go a bit and otherwise I’ll find another job or hobby.”

The couple from Hoorn had been struggling with the idea of selling the yellow cart for some time, but recently made the final decision. Dirk and Astrid do not yet know whether the new owners will leave the yellow cart on the beach. “We pass the baton and have full confidence that they will make something beautiful out of it.”

Next summer, the couple plans to travel with the camper to Norway, the homeland of Astrid. “During the summer we have never been there because we were always here with the cart,” explains Dirk. “So it’s time to go that way.”
