Sad day for all fans of Turbine Potsdam. After 26 years of excellence, the club is relegated from the women’s Bundesliga.

The former Champions League winner and multiple German champion has no chance of staying up after the 1: 5 (1: 4) against Bayer Leverkusen. The women from Potsdam are in last place two games before the end of the season.

Coach’s team had to defend themselves against the Werkself Marco Gebhardt on Saturday after goals from Verene Wieder (5th/32nd minute), Jill Bayings (12th/47th) and Lara Marti (45th) were clearly beaten again.

May Kyokawa (21.) was only able to shorten the gap for Potsdam in the Karl Liebknecht Stadium.

Only with a win would Turbine have had a minimal chance of remaining in the top flight. However, this was already gone after the Bayer goals in the initial phase.

In addition, further successes against the top teams of Eintracht Frankfurt (May 21) and Bayern Munich (May 28) should have followed.

In the pre-season Potsdam had, at that time still with a coach Sofian Chahed, played for participation in the Champions League until the last day of the game, but then missed the competition. In 2010, Turbine had won the premier class for the last time.

A quick return of the traditional club to the top women’s division is not a sure-fire success. In view of massive financial losses, especially compared to the competition from clubs that also play in the men’s Bundesliga, Potsdam is threatened with a difficult sporting future.
