From now on, the clownfish Nemo and Co. will be welcoming Berliners back to their homes: After being closed for 2.5 years, the Aquadom in Mitte has reopened.

The largest free-standing aquarium in the world (1 million liters, 26 degree warm water) was renovated for a total of 2.6 million euros. Silicone seals were renewed, the pool was thoroughly cleaned.

“It’s like building at home,” says Uwe Abraham (71), Managing Director of the Berlin Society for Large Aquariums. “The surface must be clean, dry and free of grease when working with acrylic.”

Divers had caught the 1700 fish. They lived in swimming pools beneath the building complex while the work was being carried out.

If you want to take the lift through the Aquadom, which is unique in the world, you need a ticket for the neighboring Sealife Aquarium (19 euros).
