The Falcons selected Ryan third overall in the 2008 draft. He was named the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player in 2016 and led the Falcons to the Super Bowl that season, losing to the New England Patriots in overtime.
“Only” a third round pick
While this is the end of an era in Atlanta, the Colts are now trying to get consistency in the quarterback position for at least a few years with Ryan, who was 37 at the start of the season. Since Andrew Luck’s surprising resignation in 2019, Indianapolis has tried Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers and most recently Wentz – with moderate success.
In the trade communicated on March 21, the Falcons only got access to the third round of the draft from the Colts. Because the team had been trying to find quarterback Deshaun Watson in the past few weeks and it was clear that they were no longer planning with their veteran, the Falcons were in a comparatively bad negotiating position. However, Watson decided to move to the Cleveland Browns. The Falcons instead signed contracted quarterback Marcus Mariota.
