The buildings were sold to a project developer at the end of 2017. Now, six years later, all work is done. 21 apartments have been created in the HBS, Zuiderschool and gymnasium. On the rest of the site, 18 court houses and one detached house have been built.
Peter de Vries walks through the old school, past the new building and looks at the apartments in the gymnasium. “Really special,” he says. De Vries has been working as a janitor for Stad & Esch for about 39 years now, largely in the former HBS. “There were about 1,000 students walking around here. You knew everyone.” That is something different at the new location, he notes. There is certainly a double number of students walking around. And there old concierge work has made way for desk work. “You used to report to the concierge if there was something. Now you report to the desk. So we no longer have that contact.”
