After 10 years in St. Pauli: Buchtmann goes to VfB Oldenburg

“Because something should be created here”

“If it were an exciting project, I wouldn’t fundamentally say no to it either. The overall package has to fit,” said Christopher Buchtmann (30) in May at Transfermarkt when asked about a move to the 3rd division. The midfielder is continuing his career there with VfB Oldenburg after his contract with FC St. Pauli was not renewed after ten years.

“We have been in contact with Sebastian Schachten for a long time, we still played together in Hamburg. It was really good talks that convinced me that I fit in with VfB, because something is supposed to be created here and I want to be part of it,” Buchtmann is quoted as saying in a club statement. “We’ve always said we want to strengthen the squad and we’re very happy that Christopher has opted for VfB and Oldenburg. This shows very clearly that he is very keen on the challenge with us,” said sporting director Sebastian Schachten. “He’s a player who always wants to win and transmits that to his team-mates.”

For Buchtmann, Oldenburg is the first third division station of his career, in which he made 190 appearances (19 goals/21 assists) in the German lower house with St. Pauli. In the meantime, he reached his career high of 1.5 million euros with the “Kiezkickers”, he is currently valued at 350,000 euros, which makes him the most valuable VfB professional.
