AFGHANISTAN EARTHQUAKE | At least 2,500 dead in Saturday’s chain of earthquakes in northwest Afghanistan

At least 2,500 people have died from earthquake chain that occurred on Saturday in the Afghan province of Heratin the northwest of Afghanistanas confirmed by a spokesperson for the Taliban authorities, in what has become one of the worst catastrophes of this nature in the Central Asian country of the last Two decades. Furthermore, there have been reported more than 9,240 injured and more of 1,000 houses destroyed, according to the balance sheet published by the Afghan Ministry of Disaster Management.

Late this Saturday, the main spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahidthe implementation of a broad deployment of security forces advanced rescue with character of urgency to alleviate the effects of the chain of earthquakes.

The chain, of at least four earthquakes preliminary magnitude between 5.5 and 6.3was recorded in the province in a radius of approximately 50 kilometers and it was especially felt in the town of Zendejana population of about 10,000 inhabitants in the river valley Hari Rud.

All the earthquakes shook the region in the space of only one houraccording to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The two most notable earthquakes, both magnitude 6.3occurred about 33 kilometers northeast of this locality, with a hypocenter located respectively at 14 and 10 kilometers deep respectively. We must add a third earthquake 5.5 29 kilometers from the town.

The fourth and last earthquake, of magnitude 5.9was recorded 35 kilometers from Herat city, with a hypocenter at 7.7 kilometers.
