Against Kuala Lumpur City
Al-Seeb became Oman’s first AFC Cup winners with a well-deserved 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur City FC. In their first international appearance, the West Asia Zone winners were saved in front of a crowd of 27,722 by keeper Ahmed Al-Rawahi, who made a massive save to deny Kuala Lumpur a chance to lead, who had been in the game up to that point.
Al-Seeb then spectacularly took the lead in the 22nd minute with a direct corner from Ali Al-Busaidi when the chipped ball went over everyone’s head. Head coach Rashid Jaber’s Omani also controlled the game and in the 37th minute Abdul Aziz Al-Muqbali scored with a header to make it 2-0.
In the second half, the Malaysians pushed to come back, but failed several times at the strong keeper Al-Rawaki. In the 69th minute, another attack down the left flank, Al-Seeb made it 3-0 with a solo run from Muhsen Al-Ghassani. Shortly thereafter, Kuala Lumpur had another top chance, but it was defused by Al-Rawahi.
Al-Seeb’s captain Eid Al-Farsi was voted Player of the Tournament. Top scorers were finalist Paulo Josue of Kuala Lumpur, Viettel’s Pedro Paulo and Sogdiana’s Jasur Khasanov (five goals each). Victory for Al-Seeb, who met a team outside West Asia for the first time, secures the club a place in the 2023/24 AFC Champions League qualifying round.
