Around 15 months after his 27 million euro move from Borussia Dortmund to West Ham United, Niclas Füllkrug’s conclusion about his time in London must be sobering. The 32-year-old striker appeared on the field 27 times for the Hammers, scoring three times and setting up two goals. The German international striker was out for 202 days due to injury – including league breaks due to international matches. A change could therefore be in the offing for the Hanover native in winter. This was confirmed by player agent Thorsten Wirth from the ROOF agency.
“Looking back, you have to say that the transfer didn’t work. We don’t have to sugarcoat anything,” said Wirth in the “Tomorrow Business Podcast” from journalist Tom Junkersdorf. You have to look together with the club, where Füllkrug is contractually bound until 2028: “How much longer do you give the whole thing? Is it already the moment to react?” When asked whether the agency wanted to bring the goalscorer off the island, the consultant answered accordingly: “That always has to happen in cooperation with the club, but I think it can make sense to change something.”
Wirth emphasized that Füllkrug suffered a new injury every time it felt like a breakthrough could be achieved. The Bundesliga top scorer from 2022/23 is currently missing with a torn muscle bundle; last season he had a long-term Achilles tendon irritation and a thigh injury. “That’s a shame. He had a bit of negative momentum and some bad luck,” said the advisor.
Update: According to Sky, Füllkrug wants to leave England in the winter. According to the pay-TV broadcaster, the Bundesliga would be an exciting option for the offensive man, who could also be interested in another league. Füllkrug’s big goal is to take part in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Filling jug “actually made for the Premier League”
After 15 goals and ten assists in 43 games for BVB and the strong European Championship 2024 in Germany, in which he scored twice in five games for the DFB team, the decision for West Ham and the Premier League was made with “complete conviction,” said Wirth: “Many people would probably sign that, who see Niclas as a classic penalty area striker – strong header game, physically strong, can shield the ball: actually like for them Premier League made.”
The last rumor was at the beginning of the year about a possible transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt as the successor to Omar Marmoush (26, Man City). But that didn’t become concrete. Since then, its market value has fallen in two steps from 15 million to 10 million euros.
