Adrianne Lenker asks fans to be quiet at concerts

Adrianne Lenker asked her fans to practice silence during concerts: “If music is being played in a room and an artist is on stage practicing his craft, then when you enter this room you should try to be mindful be and listen and not talk,” the Big Thief singer wrote in a video message on Instagram.

“If only the room were quiet, it could be so amazing”

The matter has been on her mind for a long time. Sometimes she has the feeling: “If only the room were quiet, it could be so incredible”. At shows, you should therefore make sure that you either listen or at least be quiet – even if you just came to see a specific act. After all, other guests want to enjoy the full range of what the artists – including the opening acts – have to offer.

Silence is golden

The 30-year-old is not demanding a complete ban on speaking in concert halls. However, some consideration for the other visitors and artists is necessary: ”If you want to talk, greet people and make contacts, you can of course do that. But if you’re doing that in a room where there’s a performance, other people listening there have no say at all. And then the room is suddenly noisy,” says Lenker.

According to the musician, a quiet atmosphere allows for much more dynamics. As a person who creates sound waves, in silent halls she feels like she can breathe. Sometimes people walk in not realizing where they are. Their priority would then be to greet their friends or family first. “When someone’s on stage, they’re probably pouring out their hearts. Then it’s hard to just let yourself be chatted up,” says Lenker.

In summer, Big Thief fans can prove in three German cities that they are among the respectful concertgoers: The shows in Cologne (June 23rd), Hamburg (July 1st) and Berlin (July 4th) will be presented by ROLLING STONE .
