Adele not happy about memes of herself: “I don’t like being famous”

The supposedly bad-tempered Adele at the 2022 NBA game became an internet hit – Adele is now clarifying.

When Adele attended an NBA All-Star game in 2022 and didn’t seem at all enthusiastic in a close-up on the so-called “celebrity cam”, the anti-Adele quickly became a meme and the clip of the bored-looking singer went viral. During a concert on her current tour, she took up the meme topic and explained the story behind the situation in more detail.

What was happening?

With Adele sitting in the front row on the sidelines, it didn’t take long until cameras were pointed at her and footage of her was shown on the big screen and via live stream. However, Adele didn’t seem to be happy about it, avoiding eye contact and looking around seemingly disinterested – until she was no longer being filmed. A short time later, the video caused a whole series of reactions on the Internet and new slogans were sent around. A star who sits at the front of such a big game, but who doesn’t seem to care at all about the surroundings, was a source of meme food.

The singer has her own interpretation of the moment…

“I don’t like being famous”

“Do you remember that viral meme of me looking like I give a damn,” Adele asked fans in attendance at one of her “Weekends With Adele” gigs in Las Vegas. She then elaborated: “It sounds crazy, but I really don’t like being famous, okay? So of course I know that when I sit on the sidelines at a basketball game, people basically ask about something like that [Aufmerksamkeit].”

However, at the time she said no to the question of whether she could be filmed. “The people with the camera came and asked me twice. They said, ‘Do you mind if we film you? Can we put you on screen?’… I was very upset because I asked not to be filmed,” the musician explained, adding that she didn’t know that the whole situation would also be televised. She simply wanted to show her frustration at that moment – she didn’t know what would come of it.

Counter to lip filler comments

There were quickly tons of comments online about how unhappy she looked and whether she might be angry. Something that was also very often commented on, in addition to her mood, was her full lips. Some wondered (and the internet) whether the 35-year-old had helped cosmetically. She also addressed these rumors in Las Vegas and countered: “The reason why my lips looked like they were filled – because I have naturally big lips, I don’t need a filler – was because I was pouting.”
