Addicted soldier in jail for stealing from ex-in-laws and illegal debit card payments

A 29-year-old soldier from Vught has been given a six-month prison sentence for stealing almost 10,000 euros from the house of his ex-parents-in-law in Rosmalen. He also illegally withdrew money and defrauded people via Marktplaats, according to the military chamber at the court in Arnhem. He used the money that the Vught soldier ‘earned’ to support his gambling addiction.

The man had already been convicted of similar offenses and was still on probation. That is why the court also gives him 50 hours of community service, which was previously conditionally imposed on him.

He must also compensate victims who have claimed this. In total this amounts to more than 8,600 euros.

This is not the end of the matter as far as the court is concerned. If the soldier from Vught makes the same mistake again in the next three years, or does not comply with special conditions, he will go to jail for another six months. These conditions include that he must undergo treatment for his addiction and that he is no longer allowed to gamble. The military chamber hopes that this will help him stay on the right path in the future.

Debit cards
According to the judge, the soldier committed misconduct between December last year and early July. He stole the debit cards with which he used to plunder money from other people’s accounts from two cars. He also sold stuff via Marktplaats and also received money for it, but his ‘customers’ could whistle at the orders.

Ten cartridges were also found in the soldier’s room and some cocaine and a tear gas canister in his car.

Advice from the probation service and a psychologist shows that the man from Vught suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSS), other personality problems and addictions to alcohol and gambling. Due to his psychological condition, according to the judge, not all accusations can be attributed to him.

The victims live spread across our country.
