‘AD goes way too far with this headline’

Rarely do we see Marieke Elsinga so angry: she goes completely crazy on the AD in a video in her Instagram stories. What’s going on? And does the Qmusic DJ have a point?

Marieke Elsinga really goes all out. The RTL 4 presenter was scrolling through the AD app yesterday and was completely shocked. She is furious. But not just a little; no, really furious. In a savage video she makes short work of the newspaper, which, according to her, operates in a disgusting manner.

Dirty filmmaker

What is going on? Has Angela de Jong written something mean again about her program The Jump? Is our national tube whisperer calling for the scrapping of Marieke’s meaningless TV formats? No. The AD opinion diva has nothing to do with it at all. In fact, it’s really about something completely different.

Marieke is angry about one news article with the headline: ‘Dutch pedophile filmmaker (72) gave parents money in exchange for sleepovers, British accomplices jailed’. “A man from the Netherlands has been involved over a longer period of time in a pedophile gang whose members traveled around the world to sexually abuse vulnerable children.”

Fucking crazy

That article was not clicked on by Marieke, but she could not ignore the headline. “Sometimes I get so fúcking crazy about headlines on newspaper websites – well, now I’ll specifically mention the AD, because it happens there very often – that are so intense that you can’t read the news even if you don’t want to see it and don’t want to. Click on it, just in the header until you get. Why is that?!”

She continues: “So I just opened my news app. I thought: let’s just look at what happened today and there is a headline that really makes me sad and I can no longer read it. And I don’t want to read the article, it’s about a pedophile. I don’t want to read the article, but because of the headline I’ve actually read everything. STOP IT.”

Guessing sounds

The big question is what Marieke actually expects from a news app. In her radio show on Qmusic she can bury her head in the sand and guess sounds with her listeners – ‘Is this the sound of a crackling cracker in a toilet bowl?’ ‘YES, YOU WON!’ – but of course that’s not what the real world looks like.

And that is of course what the AD reports on. It is of course relevant to know what deception is taking place in the world and that people will notice it to some extent, because only then will there be enough awareness to take decisive action. But Marieke prefers to have that out of her sight.

War victims

You may wonder what Marieke can tolerate. Do articles about young war victims also go too far? Or about mass brawls and hostage dramas?

If you filter all that out, at a certain point you are only left with Angela de Jong’s column. And that won’t exactly make Marieke happy, given the level of her TV programs…
