ACV rumbles on with victory over GVVV: only leader

Another three points. Leader only. And undefeated for eighteen games in a row. ACV rumbles on. In Veenendaal, GVVV was beaten 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. There are still seven rounds of competition to go, but the countdown can begin with caution.

ACV will still play at home against Excelsior ’31, SteDoCo, Sportlust ’46 and ASWH and will visit Hoek, Sparta Nijkerk and VVOG. ,,We don’t look beyond matches”, said Ruud Jalving. “The next match is always the most important. That’s what the focus is always on.”

Well deserved win

ACV’s victory was deserved. Based mainly on the good game in the second half. Before the break, the game was even. The team from Assen was then quite sloppy in possession and embarrassed themselves a few times with inaccurate wide passes.

The home team took no advantage. The Veenendalers got no further than a swipe from Quincy Veenhof who bounced over the crossbar over Enver Spijodic’s goal and a placed shot from Barry Maguire that was headed off the goal line by Luka Prljic.

GVVV became the most dangerous with sharp corner kicks. The uncertain-looking Spijodic initially had no idea. After the restart, the least passed goalkeeper of the Derde Divisie recovered and was again the reliable closing post that he has been all season.

By playing the ball around in the back, the team from Assen tried to tempt the opponent to put high pressure and then strike with a quick counter-attack. GVVV, however, did not let himself be lured out of the tent and only attacked the ball at the height of the center line. The topper was therefore not spectacular before the break, tactics prevailed.

Fine divorce

Halfway through the first half, ACV got a better grip on the game, well led by referee Sam Dröge from Zuidlaren. After preparatory work by Giovanni Zwikstra, the Drents created a few dabs of opportunities. But goalkeeper Jan van Willige did not budge. First he made a formidable save from a thunderous thump from Steyn Strijker and in the rebound he also turned Gijs Jasper’s effort from close range with great bravura.

The second half was for ACV, without Justin Mulder, who remained injured in the dressing room. The build-up went much more carefully than before the break and there was also more depth in the game. ,,And we were also more patient and started to play more from side to side”, Jalving added.

Last post Zwikstra

With two goals of excellent quality, the team from Assen distanced itself from GVVV in a period of four minutes. ‘Troublemaker’ Zwikstra played an important role in both hits. At the 0-1 of Niels Grevink, that other ‘nausea’, he signed for the assist with a custom deep pass. Zwikstra took the 0-2 after good perseverance from Strijker himself.

When Tariq Dilrosun scored from a corner kick with a header in the final phase, things got tense again. But ACV, with Prljic and Yassine Abouzraa in the center of the back like two rocks in the surf, didn’t let it get any further than 1-2.

Jalving said he was proud of his men who have been performing excellently for so long and continued to push the line against GVVV. “We are now three points clear of GVVV and have given them a little bit. But the decision has not yet been made. It is now important that we keep our focus.”
