ACV has struck many times in the final phase this season and it struck again last Saturday. When they visited Scheveningen it became 3-2 for the team from Assen. The winning one came from the foot of a special player.
Last week ACV lost at home to championship candidate De Treffers, but otherwise the PhD candidate from Assen is also a difficult team to beat in the Second Division. They proved this in the away game against Scheveningen, a mid-table team this season, but a regular at this level for years.
ACV was badly damaged by the loss of goalkeeper Ramon Nijland (ill) and strongmen Gijs Jasper and Giovanni Zwikstra, but that did not stop the team of coach Ruud Jalving from taking the lead early on. Within fifteen minutes, Boy Spijkerman made it 0-1 with a beautiful shot in the intersection. With that score, ACV reached the break. They also scored quickly in the second half and once again it was Spijkerman who signed it.
“But I knew it hadn’t been played yet,” Javing said afterwards. And that turned out to be the case, as Scheveningen made it 2-1. “After that it got hectic. Freddy Quispel had the chance to score 1-3 after a great move, but shortly afterwards they scored 2-2. At that time I actually already cherished the point. But in the last minute Ibi (Ibrahim Sillah, ed.) made it 2-3 from a scrimmage. Nice for him, he will fly to Sierra Leone tomorrow for international matches against Ethiopia and Egypt.”
That was not the only player who boarded the bus with an extra good feeling afterwards. Brothers Mark and Erwin Jagt were in the starting line-up together for the first time at ACV. The latter replaced first goalkeeper Nijland. “It was his first time at this level. He did a very good job and that makes me proud. In any case, it is nice that we can cope when important players such as Zwikstra and Jasper are not there.”
