Actress Kang Soo-yeon, known as Korea’s first world star, has died

Korean favorite actor Kang Soo-yeon has died at the age of 55. Soo-yeon became an internationally renowned actor in the mid-80s. Soo-eyon’s international popularity lasted until the late 1990s. He has often been referred to as “Korea’s first world star”. Soo-yeon is remembered from movies like Sibaji, Aje aje bara aje and Hanbando.

Soo-yeon suffered a heart attack at his home in South Korea on Thursday, May 5, after which he was rushed to hospital for treatment. The actress died Saturday after two days in the hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Soo-yeon is laid to rest in the tomb on Wednesday.

The actor’s last production was a Netflix film Jung_E, whose filming ended in January this year. The film is scheduled to be released this year on a streaming service.

Soo-yeon was awarded Best Actor for a Film at the 1987 Venice Film Festival Sibaji or The Surrogate Womb.
