Actor Thijs Römer abused girls online: not on appeal after all

Actor Thijs Römer will not appeal against the sentence he was given last year for abusing three underage girls online. His lawyer Bénédicte Ficq reports this on X. One of those abused girls is a now 23-year-old woman from Rijsbergen.

“I realize that the events have had a major impact on the victims and that only one person is responsible here: myself,” Römer said in the statement shared by his lawyer on X.

“I was not able to properly express this insight during the hearing last summer. I can now only ‘prove’ the sincerity and value of this realization by accepting the court sentence and therefore not continuing with the appeal I filed. I hope this will bring peace to the lives of everyone involved.”

Now that he has decided not to appeal, Römer agrees to the month’s prison sentence he must serve.

Nude pics and dick pic
The online abuse happened between November 2015 and November 2017. Römer encouraged girls to send nude photos, among other things. The three women who filed a complaint against the actor were 14, 15 and 16 years old at the time.

The sixteen-year-old victim is from Rijsbergen. She and a few other fans of Römer were in WhatsApp groups with him. This way she received, among other things, a dick pic from the actor. He also told her how to pleasure herself and asked her to send videos so she could ‘get done’.

“The suspect has continuously abused the dominance of the victims who looked up to him or were even in love with him,” the judge said in August. Römer was then given a month in prison and a maximum community service order of 240 hours. According to the judge, he was guilty of criminally unacceptable sexual behavior.

The actor soon announced that he would appeal against his prison sentence. He did not recognize himself in the verdict. So he now abandons that.

Victims relieved
Römer’s three victims are relieved that he has decided not to appeal. “We didn’t see it coming,” their lawyer Maartje Schaap said.

“All three girls are relieved and happy that it is now over and that there will not be another trial in which things are said about them,” says Schaap. “The time has finally come for them to start processing things.”
