Actor, singer and musical star Willem Nijholt (88) passed away

Actor Willem Nijholt died on Friday at the age of 88. A spokesperson for the family informed the ANP news agency.

Nijholt broke through in the sixties with his role in the children’s television series Oebele. He then played in dozens of musicals, films and plays. In the early 1970s he worked with Wim Sonneveld and Corrie van Gorp. After that he mainly performed in musicals and cabarets, such as Foxtrot by Annie MG Schmidt and the Dutch version of Miss Saigon. In 1977, Nijholt was awarded the Johan Card Prize, which is awarded annually to a person who has made a remarkable achievement in the field of theatre.

He was also regularly seen on television. His last role was in the Dutch television series Penoza II as mafia boss Henk Ooms. In 2011, Nijholt was awarded Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
