Demonstrators want to block freeways again in Berlin from mid-June, causing traffic jams that stretch for kilometers.
The group “Last Generation” announced that “far more people than before” should now take part in the blockade actions and make the autobahns “a place of peaceful resistance”. The new campaigns in Berlin should start on June 18th.
According to the police, the initiative blocked 45 motorway exits in Berlin in January and February with seated and taped demonstrators. In Berlin alone, this led to more than 270 criminal charges and around 120 charges of administrative offenses.
This was followed by blockades at several German airports and the port of Hamburg. Actions were suspended in March because of the war in Ukraine, but later resumed. On Tuesday, demonstrators repeatedly blocked an intersection in Dresden.
The group said it had been organizing talks and meetings over the past few weeks and “training more and more people in nonviolent, civil resistance.” In an open letter, she called on the federal government to do more to combat climate change immediately.
In order to enforce this, “a public disruption by interrupting everyday life is needed,” is the group’s argument.
