Joe Cocker, who has been one of the greats of blues rock since his legendary performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, died of lung cancer in 2014. Until 2013 he was still regularly on stage – in the 1970s sometimes also to be able to pay his bills at all, later out of creative temptation. One of his most legendary concerts took place in 1997 at the Waldbühne Berlin. Arte shows a recording of the gig with the concert film “Across from Midnight”.

At the Berlin Waldbühne, Cocker played hits from 30 years of his career, a mixture of originals and covers, of course ‘Could You Be Loved’, ‘Delta Lady’, ‘Up Where We Belong’, the Beatles cover ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’, ‘The Letter’, ‘Unchain My Heart’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’.”

Joe Cocker had made himself particularly popular in Germany

In the 1990s, Joe Cocker made himself particularly popular in Germany, when he performed at a concert in Berlin three days after the fall of the Wall or shared the stage with the Kelly Family. “Across from Midnight” can be seen on Friday, March 3, at 10:40 p.m. The film is also available to stream in the Arte media library until March 17th.
