Acidification is gradually turning oceans into noisy cafés: how dramatic is this for animals like whales?

Call it one of the unexpected effects of climate change: our CO2 emissions are making the ocean water increasingly acidic and therefore noisier. This is evident from new research by a group of Dutch oceanographers in the scientific journal PeerJ. And all that noise is not good news for whales, dolphins and even shellfish larvae, the researchers said. But what is the precise impact of climate change on sound in the ocean? What does this do to the animals? And is there a solution to this problem?
