Because of an Achilles tendon injury, four-time Grand Slam tournament winner Naomi Osaka will not participate in the grass classic in Wimbledon.
“My Achilles tendon is still bad, see you next time,” tweeted the 24-year-old tennis player from Japan. The organizers of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year (June 27 to July 10) confirmed Osaka’s cancellation. The former world number one had already withdrawn for the lawn tournament in Berlin. Most recently, Osaka played at the French Open, but lost in Paris in the first round.
In the past, Osaka had considered not starting at Wimbledon because there are no world ranking points up for grabs this year. The professional organizations WTA and ATP decided this together after the Wimbledon organizers had excluded Russian and Belarusian players because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.
