Top Gun Maverick has won Best Picture of 2022 at the Golden Tomato Awards. The prize has been awarded by the American website “Rotten Tomatoes” since 1999. The sequel to the 1986 classic also won in the Best Wide Release Movie and Best Action & Adventure Movie categories. The operators understand “wide release” to mean films that were shown in more than 600 venues when they were released in cinemas.

The award is based on a list of the aggregates of two rating matrices used on the website – viewer and critic ratings. Top Gun: Maverick is the film with the highest combined score. The figures serve as a basis up to December 31, 2022. At that time (and up to now), the film had 99% positive viewer ratings from over 50,000 votes and 96% positive ratings from 464 critics. The following nine spots on Rotten Tomatoes’ Best Movie list include The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Pinocchio, Turning Red, Happening, The Batman, “Fire of Love”, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Till” – some with higher critic ratings, but with lower combined ratings. 30 films each received awards in a total of 33 categories.
The film, directed by Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski (“Oblivion”), is also nominated for six Oscars: Best Picture, Best Original Song – Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” – and several major technique categories. The Oscars 2023 will be awarded on March 13th.
