Accident before 200m semifinals: Lyles unimpressed – Hudson lucky in disguise

Status: 08/24/2023 10:12 p.m

The 200m sprinters led by Noah Lyles had an accident involving two vehicles before the semi-finals of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Nevertheless, Lyles easily won the postponed run. Jamaican Andrew Hudson, who had eye problems after the crash, was eliminated but is still in the final.

Two vehicles resembling golf carts collided on Thursday evening (08/24/2023) on the way to the stadium. A man fell out of one of the cars but got up on his own and took a few steps away from the scene of the accident. According to the world association, the volunteer is doing well again. The organizing committee is investigating the incident and reviewing transportation procedures, it said.

“Maybe next time I’ll walk instead.”

World 100m champion Lyles and the other 200m sprinters in his semi-final sat in the other car and were visibly shocked. Jamaican Andrew Hudson held his eye after the collision and then complained about problems. As a result, the semi-final race was postponed.

Lyles reaches for double gold

“That shouldn’t happen, it’s a shock for them,” said ARD athletics expert Frank Busemann. “Now they have to see how they deal with it.” Lyles appeared superficially unimpressed. The American won the heat in 19.76 seconds and is aiming for a second gold medal in Friday’s final.

Hudson only finished fifth in 20.38 seconds. According to the world association, the Jamaican had agreed to take part in the race. In the accident, he got a piece of glass in his eye, said Hudson, who was treated by a doctor. “I saw everything only blurred.”

Hudson subsequently set for the final

“It wasn’t actually possible to walk properly,” said the Jamaican in an interview with Sportschau. “I tried to give it my all. But that wasn’t what I’m capable of.”

He would have been out in fifth place, but the judges later put him in the final on Friday (9:50 p.m.). Until then, he will continue to be treated. “They got most of the glass out. Now I have to go back and have it looked at to make sure it’s okay. My eye is pretty cloudy at the moment. I’m doing my best,” said the 26-year-old.
