Accelerated application procedures for people with disabilities who want to become a civil servant | Inland

From kitchen help to accountants and lawyers: Minister of the Civil Service Petra De Sutter (Green) wants to entice people with disabilities to the government en masse by speeding up the application procedure. “It is impossible that almost 99% of the civil service does not have a disability.”

Far too few people with a disability, thinks Federal Minister of the Civil Service Petra De Sutter (Green). Because of the 65,000 civil servants who work for the federal government, only 1.06% have a disability. In 2016 this was still 1.44%, but since then that percentage has decreased year after year.

In order to achieve the target of 3 percent, De Sutter is now pulling out the ‘big guns’: she wants to attract people with disabilities to the government by recruiting them through an accelerated application procedure. “For 20 years, the government has been taking action to hire people with disabilities, but still almost 99% of the civil service does not have a disability. This may indicate that people with disabilities have been excluded – consciously or not – for years,” says the Green Deputy Prime Minister.

There is still some serious work to be done: the government still has to hire 1,112 full-time employees to meet the 3% quota. The jobs will therefore go in all directions. From receptionists and kitchen staff to HR employees, project managers and department heads: the government needs it all. The disability – mental or physical – will not be specified – although it is expected that mainly people with a physical disability will end up with the government. Just to be clear: anyone can apply, except that people with disabilities have an advantage due to the accelerated application procedure.
