KYIV, UKRAINE – FEBRUARY 24: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks to the media during a press conference on February 24, 2023 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Russia’s large-scale invasion in 2022 approaches its one-year anniversary on February 24. The Ukrainian President has largely remained in Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale attack one year ago, making occasional visits to troops in frontline areas and a few high- profile trips to allied countries to lobby for military aid. For the second time in a row, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was refused a request to be connected to the Academy Awards (on the night of Monday, March 13) and to give a speech. The Oscar organizers are still not joining their colleagues in other bodies – Selenskyj was previously allowed to send out appeals for help for his country at various award ceremonies, such as the Grammy Awards and the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
The Big Oscar Prediction:
For the second year in a row, however, the Oscars have declined requests for the president to appear digitally at the awards ceremony. However, the Academy Awards are not alone in their decision. The Toronto International Film Festival had previously rejected Zelenskyj’s request due to the “political nature of his performances”.
