Abuser of Ties will go to jail for six months: ‘Glad it’s finished now’

Six months in prison: that is the punishment for the Eindhoven resident who hit Ties van Beek from Veldhoven so hard in the face in November 2019 that he became blind in one eye. For Ties it feels like the end of a nasty roller coaster. “Glad it’s over.”

About two and a half years ago, things went completely wrong at the Bontgenoten Winter Festival. Ties was hit hard on the head by the Eindhoven resident, a professional kick boxer. He broke his eye socket, cheekbones and nose. The damage to his left eye was so extensive that he could no longer see through it for the rest of his life.

He himself was not present in court in Den Bosch on Monday afternoon, says Ties. “Pronouncing it is a formality that I didn’t have to attend.” He heard through the media that the sentence for his abuser is a lot lower than the one and a half years in prison demanded by the Public Prosecution Service. “I expected that a bit. That man has never come into contact with the law and then it remains the Netherlands, huh.”

Still, he won’t lose sleep over it. “I am quite sober anyway. It is especially nice that there is now a verdict. Of course it took a long time before it was known at all who had done it. And there were no camera images either, so you have to be satisfied with this. to be.” Incidentally, the man also has to pay damages of 36,500 euros to Ties.
