DC United from Washington is already a familiar club to Rooney, as he played for the team in 2018–2020. In his 48 matches in the club’s shirt, Rooney scored 23 goals.
According to the Washington Post, Rooney has agreed with the club on the terms of a coaching contract, and he arrived in the US capital on Sunday.
DC United have had a poor season as they are second to last in the league after 17 games played. The club has recently been coached by a temporary head coach Chad Ashton.
As a player, Rooney retired from football in January 2021 when he was appointed as the head coach of Derby County. He left the team relegated to the third tier of England in June.
Rooney, 36, is the all-time top scorer for England and Manchester United.
