Some 30 people have gathered this Friday in the Sant Jaume square in Barcelona against the request for the release of footballer Dani Alves, who was imprisoned without bail on January 20 for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman on December 30 at the Sutton nightclub in the Catalan capital.

The rally, organized by Lliures i Combatives, Esquerra Revolucionària and Sindicat d’Estudiants, began around 6:00 p.m. under the motto ‘No to the release of Dani Alves!‘, and protesters have shouted slogans such as “Enough of patriarchal justice“”, “It’s not abuse, it’s rape”, “I do believe you” and “I don’t want your compliment, I want your respect”, among others.

Speaking to Europa Press, the spokeswoman for Lliures i Combatives, Teresa Prados, has assured that she does not believe in justice: “Unfortunately we are used to these cases where the victim is blamed and the rapist gets away with it. We know how this patriarchal and sexist violence works, and we know that they will take advantage of any gap to release him.”
