ABN AMRO apologizes for historical links to slavery

Forerunners of ABN AMRO were largely involved in the slave trade. A banking house that merged into the major bank was, according to historians, a pivot in the slavery economy of the Caribbean in the eighteenth century. Another predecessor was a slave ship insurance broker. ABN AMRO now offers ‘heartfelt apologies’ for its historical involvement in slavery. The bank does not offer financial compensation, but the group does want to take more action to combat social inequality.
