Abigail Amoretti (17) suddenly goes into labor during her flight to Miami. She is then seven months pregnant. When the baby is born, it is not breathing – but some doctors on board save the baby’s life as true heroes.
The girl wants to visit her grandmother in the United States. She takes a flight from Managua in Nicaragua to Miami. The teenager suffers from stomach pain and goes to the toilet. At first she has no idea that labor has started – after all, she is only seven months pregnant.
However, a doctor on board the plane, Raquel Rodriguez, hears screams coming from the plane toilet and immediately realizes the seriousness of the situation. She lays Abigail on some towels in the aisle of the plane. Then some dramatic moments follow.
Breech position
The baby appears to be breech. The girl begins to push while Rodriguez gives directions. The doctor, meanwhile, is approached by a Honduran doctor, Suamy Bermudez, who offers to help. Bermudez takes over the complex breech birth.
The baby is born, but the doctors determine that the little girl is not breathing. The baby looks completely purple. There doesn’t seem to be any life in the premature baby. But don’t worry, the doctors know what to do. They immediately start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions.
Applause
The efforts pay off and the newborn begins to breathe on its own. Rodriguez yells that the baby is alive. A little later, baby cries can be heard in the plane. The other passengers applaud.
Due to the unexpected birth, the pilot has to change course and land in Cancun, Mexico. There, the new mother is placed in a wheelchair and taken off the plane. Video footage shows passengers cheering the new mother, while an aid worker carries the baby off board, wrapped in a blanket.
Abigail and her son will stay in Mexico for the time being to regain their strength. The visit to the grandmother is forced to be postponed. She will not only be able to embrace her grandchild, but also her great-grandchild.
