ABBA live guitarist Lasse Wellander died on Friday (April 7) after a long battle with cancer, his family announced on Sunday, April 9. ABBA, consisting of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, issued a statement remembering Wellander as a “great guitarist”.
They write: “Lasse was a dear friend, a funny guy and an excellent guitarist. Both his creative input in the recording studio and his rock solid guitar work on stage were immensely important. We mourn his tragic and untimely death and remember the kind words, sense of humor, smiling face and musical brilliance of the man who played such an important part in ABBA history. We will miss him very much and will never forget him.”
ABBA was founded in Stockholm in 1972. Since 1974, Wellander accompanied the group on stage and in the studio and was involved in all albums from 1975 to 1981. Most recently with the comeback album “Voyage” two years ago.
