Abascal accuses Sánchez of preparing “a coup d’état with the separatists”

The leader of Vox, Santiago Abascalstirred up the investiture debate of Pedro Sánchez, predicting from the beginning of his speech the “end of democracy and the abolition of the rule of law”. The ultra leader repeated several phrases of the socialist candidate and some of his ministers when they assured that the amnesty law, agreed with the independentists, was unconstitutional. “If this Parliament does not respect the laws, who is obliged to respect them. “What legitimacy do we have if those of us who have to set an example do not comply?” he asked himself from the rostrum, later accusing the acting president of “having made an agreement with a fugitive and accept what the coup plotter has ordered Puigdemont”.

Abascal’s intervention led the president of Congress, Francina Armengol, to call him to order. He did it after the Vox leader assured that Sánchez “preparing a coup d’état in collusion with the separatists”, and after singing on several occasions the “I accuse” against the socialist: “I accuse him of liquidating equality before the law, of trying to subvert the constitutional order and of ending the separation of powers,” he added.

Armengol asked Abascal to withdraw the words about the coup d’état because no deputy can “go against the very foundations of democracy.” having the floor in the House. The Vox leader had raised his tone just before when he told Sanchez that if he spoke “about the dictatorship of the votes”, he reminded him that “Hitler also came to power through elections”.

“With the dictatorship of votes, as you have said, many of the worst tyrants in history have come to power.” And he continued: “The German socialist lied less than the Spanish socialist. He said that he was going to end the Weimar Republic. You hide your intentions from him. I insist, we are facing a coup d’état and It is the fascists who carry out a coup d’état”, he concluded.

The president of the Chamber demanded not to talk about “dictatorship or coup” and Abascal responded: “I have every right to say that we are facing a coup d’état. And if they delete it from the session diary they will only be proving us right. Not even the deputies have freedom of expression in the gallery anymore”. The Vox bench started applauding and some PP deputies did so as well.

He also referred to the fact that, finally, the amnesty law proposal only had the signature of the socialists. “It is the only humiliation that you suffer. The rest have been put on the shoulders of the Spanish people. “They are going to amnesty a lot of crimes and they have agreed to amnesty those who injured the police, those who took Catalonia to the limit.”

Abascal at many times reproached the socialist for “his lies”, “his lack of morality”, and on this occasion he even spoke of “his sinister laugh”. “It seems that he has lost his mind with this attack on the Constitution,” she snapped.

The president of the Upper House, Pedro Rollan, was present at the debate. “Leave aside any doubt about holding elections and give instructions to the Senate not to process it. I ask you not to give up. The popular parties are clear that they cannot not qualify the law when it reaches the Senate, because that would imply its return to Congress and rapid processing in 20 days. In fact, the PP changed the regulations of the Chamber this Tuesday to be able to extend the deadlines.

The leader of Vox did not stay to listen to Sánchez’s reply, and when he finished speaking He left the chamber after ensuring that “he would go to the side of the Spanish people.”, in reference to the street protesters. His deputies followed him.
