A petition has been started to stop the construction of homes at the water tower in Aalsmeer. The Flower Art Museum, which is currently located in the water cellar opposite the water tower, must remain. According to the people of Aalsmeer who started the petition, Aalsmeer culture must be safeguarded.
The new owners are thinking of luxurious apartments in combination with youth, elderly or care homes, and for example a concert hall, gallery or information point about the water tower. “We are not a company that buys up land to maximize profit,” says Peter, who is an HR manager in the entertainment industry.
If new homes are to be built, this Aalsmeer art museum about flowers and plants will have to move. The foundation of the museum has tried to buy the building itself. “When we finally secured the financing, the property had already been sold,” says director Constantijn Hoffscholte.

To ensure that this museum can still remain at this location, Pierre started a petition in which he argues against the construction of homes around the water tower. “It is of course a dream come true to put apartments there,” says Pierre Tuning. “That could be better at another location where the traffic is less chaotic.”

Although the owners are not yet sure what they want, the petition against construction around the water tower has already been signed more than six hundred times. “I am surprised that it is said in advance that what we want is not possible or allowed,” says Peter van Eick. “The presentation of our plans is not until next month.”
Due to the success of the petition, which started yesterday, it will close a month earlier than planned: on May 1. “Then it will be clear once and for all that no one sees any benefit in the plans of the new buyers,” says Pierre Tuning.
