Aaf Brandt Corstius has incredibly mixed feelings about a fanny pack she wears from the fashion brand Uniqlo. “You just feel like a dumbass when you have something everyone else has.”
47-year-old Aaf Brandt Corstius bought a green fanny pack for 14.90 euros at the Uniqlo clothing store. She thinks it’s an extremely useful thing, but now feels a little bad about so many people walking around with it. “I have the following problem: I have a purse, this purse,” she begins in her podcast Aaf & Marc-Marie Find Something.
Handiest bag ever
What kind of bag is it exactly? “It’s kind of a green fanny pack kind of thing, but you hang it over your shoulder. The bag is incredibly handy and everyone has that bag, so I’m walking on the street now and every minute I see someone who has it. Not always in green, that is my only consolation, but also in white or red or black or blue.”
It belongs to Uniqlo, Aaf continues. “It is a very cheap bag and the most convenient bag ever. You think: what a small, well-arranged bag, but it fits a bizarre amount and it is a tiny bit rainproof. Not really, because I recently had to get all kinds of things out soaking wet.”
Everyone has it
The reason everyone now walks with this Uniqlo bag is according to magazine Elle because it is a TikTok trend: “When a few users posted a TikTok video about a certain bag from the Japanese Uniqlo, hundreds of them appeared in no time and the hashtag #uniqlobag has now been viewed more than seventeen million times .”
Aaf becomes insecure about it. “My thing now is: a) do I like having a purse that everyone has, and b) do I give those people a nod? You know, whatever you do if you see someone with the same car, for example. I notice that I do that and then those people look at me like: what are you doing, freak!”
Uniqlo nod
Apparently Aaf thinks that such a Uniqlo nod is necessary when she walks down the street with her bag. “I don’t think they even see that I have it, because I have a green coat and the green bag more or less disappears from that coat, so those people see one big, green surface that suddenly nods at them, but then I have to go from reacting to the other bag.”
She continues: “Only if it’s green too, right? I don’t nod at people with a white bag, but only people with a green bag. I just did it again and that woman looked at me like: what are you wearing? Yes, your purse. She could have seen that if she was as attentive as I was. Now she just thinks: who are you? I don’t know you at all! Why are you nodding?”
Dumbo
All in all, Aaf is okay with it. “In my opinion, I bought it when not everyone had that bag yet, but I should have known that it would go quickly. You also just feel like a bit of a dumbass if you have something everyone else has. Well, not if you have a black hat, for example, but a green rather specific bag and then you see ten per minute.”
