A fire broke out in a caravan on the grounds of the Rijkshemelvaartdienst artist collective on the Oude Haagseweg in Nieuw-West this afternoon. Due to the smoke development, the adjacent part of the A4 was closed for a short time.
The first report of the fire came in just after 2:30 p.m. The fire brigade scaled up to a medium fire, meaning that two tanker sprayers were needed to extinguish the fire.
That fire is now almost out, a fire brigade spokesperson said. Firefighters are currently still busy with demolition work, partly to ensure that nothing continues to smoulder.
According to the spokesperson, there were ‘many materials in the caravan’ that caused the fire to produce a lot of smoke. Due to the smoke, the adjacent part of the A4 was temporarily closed.
On the site on the Oude Haagseweg there are two buildings that were previously used by the National Aviation Service. In 1989 the buildings were squatted by people who called themselves the National Aviation Service. They are still there today.
